Belle performance mais déception pour Roy Shaw à 7-Laghi, Castelletto di Branduzzo, le 31 mars 2019

La première manche du Championnat Suisse de Karting a démarré sous un soleil radieux le 31 mars 2019 à 7-Laghi, Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italie.

Roy Shaw a conduit comme un champion tout le week-end, mais a été volé de la victoire en Super-Mini par des échecs techniques.

Roy a dominé les essais et les qualifications et a pris la pole.

En 1^ère course, Roy prenait la tête et la tenait jusqu’à deux tours de la fin, quand un mauvais réglage effectué par son équipe permettait un des poursuivants de le dépasser. Roy n’avait que la 7^ème meilleur temps mais a réussi la 2ème place.

Pour la 2^ème course, un changement de pignon, une configuration mieux équilibrée, un changement de pression des pneus et un réglage du mélange d’essence lui ont permis de démontrer comment il pouvait conduire. Le pilote en pole a démarré trop vite, ce qui, combiné à une collision au deuxième virage, a conduit le directeur de course à commander un nouveau départ. A ce deuxième départ, l’autre pilote allait trop lentement. Roy le regarda alors qu’ils s’approchaient de la ligne de départ. Roy a pris la tête mais avait coupé une ligne de contrôle avant le départ. Derrière, il y avait du chaos quand la colonne derrière la pole avait perdu des places. Roy a vu qu'il avait une pénalité et a forcé pendant toute la course, ne perdant qu'une place avec ses 3 secondes de pénalité.

En finale, Roy a pris un bon départ en 2^ème position et a poussé le leader pendant le premier demi-tour. Puis les drapeaux jaunes agités étaient sortis pour une phase lente, car une collision en premier virage avait causé le renversement d’un des karts (heureusement sans mal). Le pilote à la 3^ème place plongeait à l'intérieur de Roy sous les drapeaux jaunes dans l'épingle (aucune pénalité ne s'est ensuivie). Ils ont fait 3 tours sous la phase lente. À la reprise, Roy poussait les deux avant, mais dans la ligne droite perdait du terrain. Puis, dans le 6^ème tour en sortant de l’épingle à droite au virage 8, le moteur perdait de la puissance et ne tirait plus ni ne revenait pendant plusieurs secondes, faisant chuter Roy de 6 places. Il a poursuivi sa course, mais au 8^ème tour et à chaque tour suivant, le même échec a eu lieu, au même endroit et à la sortie de l’épingle du virage 9 à gauche. Il a fait de son mieux pour défendre et pendant le reste de chaque tour gagnait beaucoup de temps sur les autres, mais il était impuissant dans tous les sens du terme. Il s'est classé 12ème, perdant 21 points en finale contre le vainqueur, Enea Frey d’Auenstein.

Championnat provisoire :

Roy drove like a champion all weekend, but was robbed of the victory by technical failures.

On the Saturday Roy drove well, but in the session at the end of the afternoon a mystery glitch came in causing the engine to lose power coming out of tight corners (GoPro recordings and My Chrono data are available showing the failures). With the engine tuner, Claudio Possamai, the team decided that the most likely cause was an overlong fuel feed tube in the tank, in that session the fuel level had been at its lowest. The pipe was shortened, and the decision taken to run at full fuel levels on Sunday.

For Sunday Roy and his dad decided that he had the speed to go out on his own at the front of the pack and get on the front row. We tested that successfully in official practice, and Roy dominated practice and qualifying and took pole.

In Race 1 he took the lead and held it until halfway, but the setup was not correct which allowed the 2^nd place driver to take the lead 2 laps from the end. Roy was only 7^th fastest but in a clear 2^nd place.

For Race 2 a sprocket change, better balanced setup, tyre pressure change and mixture setting gave him the chance to show us how he could perform. The driver on pole started too fast, which together with a collision on the second corner led the Race Director to call a restart. On the second start the other driver went too slowly, so Roy was looking over at him as they approached the line, and Roy took the lead but had cut a tramline. Behind was a shambles as the pole side lost places. Roy saw he had a penalty and pushed all race, setting fastest lap and only losing 1 place with his 3 second penalty.

In the final Roy made a strong start into 2^nd place, and pushed the leader round half the lap. Then waved yellows came out for a slow phase, because a first corner collision had led to one of the karts overturning. The driver in 3^rd place dived up the inside of Roy under the yellows into the far hairpin (no penalty ensued). They went round under the slow phase for 3 laps. On the restart Roy was pushing the front 2, but down the back straight lost some ground on them. Then on the 6th lap coming out of the right-hand hairpin at corner 8 the engine lost power and would not pull or gain revs for several seconds, plunging Roy down 6 places. He carried on, but on the 8th lap and for each ensuing lap the same failure happened, in the same place and also coming out of the left-hand hairpin at corner 9. He did his best to defend, and round the rest of the lap made up lots of time on the others, but was powerless in every sense to do anything about it. He came in 12^th, losing 21 points in the Final on the winner, Enea Frey.
