Kerpen (DEU)

Unofficial practice, Thursday-Friday 27-28th February 2020

Roy was due to be in Lonato on February 26-29th and March 1st for the Trofeo Margutti, unfortunately postponed by government order because of cases of Corona Virus (see below) in the Italian provinces of Lombardy and Venato.

Instead, Roy was offered a 2-day test at the renowned Kerpen circuit near to Cologne in Germany. This was Roy’s first experience of a Kart Republic chassis, also of an IAME OK Junior motor although he had raced equivalent Vortex engines in OK Junior, during his first visit to Kerpen.

Thursday started overcast with a damp track, with rain starting about an hour into the session. Roy enjoyed the chassis, the track, and even the conditions although it was hard going because of the cold temperatures, and set some competitive times on consistent laps.

During Thursday afternoon the rain turned to wet snow with a fully wet track and deep puddles everywhere. The temperature dropped further...

Friday morning was bright and sunny, althoough there was snow on the ground and the track was damp with some ice patches.

By noon, the track was mostly dry, although not quite ready for slicks.

Finally, in the afternoon the track was fully dry, and as you can see on the onboards, allowed Roy three sessions on slicks, albeit in overcast conditions and on a cool track surface.
